		Anatomic Features Image 1 Image 2 Rectal Varicose Veins Cirrhosis of the liver and a few other conditions result in blockages in the liver. The veins leading from the intestines to the liver become swollen as the pressure within builds up, much like a dam across a stream. These swollen veins, really like varicose veins in the legs, most often cause problems in the esophagus or food pipe where they are prone to rupture and bleed.
