Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the colon or large bowel. The main symptoms are blood in the stool and diarrhea. The disease usually starts in the rectum and then may move upward into the rest of the colon. The inflammation consists of tiny ulcers that can't even be seen with the naked eye. These ulcers can bleed and little points of blood can be seen. As with any disease, it may be mild, moderate or severe. In Image 1, you see a mild reddening of the colon lining. At this time, there may be some occasional blood on the stool. Image 2 shows a moderate case. Here, minimal rubbing of the surface with the endoscope causes bleeding. A severe case is seen in Image 3 where there is a mixture of ulcers, bleeding and whitish exudate or pus.
