Duodenal Stricture
A stricture is a narrowing. It may be caused by a benign condition like ulcers. When a duodenal ulcer heals, the scar formation may contract forming a fixed narrowing. Other strictures may be caused by cancer. In this instance, you see a benign fixed narrowing just beyond the duodenal cap which is the first portion of the duodenum. When strictures are tight, food may not get readily through it. Symptoms of bloating, belching, nausea and even vomiting may occur. The gastroenterologist now has techniques available such as balloons which can often effectively open these strictures, thereby avoiding surgery.
