A fundoplication of the stomach is done to tighten the muscle within the lower esophagus and so prevent reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. This operation is now done mostly through the laparoscopic technique. Here you see the black endoscope entering the stomach. It has made a U-turn and is looking back on itself. The excess stomach tissue has been rolled around the lower esophagus. The normal stomach lining is in the background. This has been a successful operation and now prevents stomach acid from reaching into the lower esophagus, causing heartburn and ulcerations.Related Procedures
