WHAT IS ENDOSCOPY?

GI endoscopy is the visual examination of the upper intestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum) and the lower bowel (colon, rectum). These exams include upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. They can usually provide an immediate diagnosis. This exam is performed using a flexible tube which transmits the image inside the intestinal tract to a TV monitor using computer and fiberoptic technology. This flexible tube (endoscope) can be directed and moved around the many bends in the GI tract. A tiny, optically sensitive computer chip (camera) is on the end. Electronic signals are then transmitted through the scope to a computer which then displays the image on the large video screen. An open channel in the scope allows other instruments to be passed through it in order to take tissue samples, remove polyps and perform other exams.

Procedure

HIGH TECHNOLOGY
More accurate and timely diagnoses are now possible, thanks to our state-of-the-art video imaging equipment. Our facilities include multiple large and small video monitors in each procedure room. The video imaging system is networked for computer storage, which allows full-color hard print of each procedure and long-term storage of all images of procedures when required.

Given understandable concerns about the transmission of infectious agents, our ability to clean and sterilize endoscopy equipment is critical. At the West Shore Endoscopy Center, staff members have substantial experience in infection control, and all equipment is disinfected or sterilized according to the highest standards for health care facilities.

HighTech

To better view the inside of the intestinal tract, the GI tract needs to be inflated. Room air is generally used elsewhere, but it has to be passed, either rectally or by belching, over many hours or even into the next day. This frequently leads to abdominal discomfort and bloating. At WSEC, we use the safe gas, carbon dioxide, because it is absorbed very rapidly through the bowel wall into the bloodstream and then expelled through normal breathing. With carbon dioxide, abdominal discomfort after endoscopy is virtually eliminated.

CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST
A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) provides intravenous medications for sedation. With the medication and technique used, you retain very little memory of the procedure, yet recovery is exceptionally fast. The CRNA is continuously and solely responsible for monitoring all vital signs to ensure patient safety, while a doctor with a registered nurse assisting conduct the exam.
